Mourinho dismisses Portugal´s Euro 2012 chances

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says his native Portugal have little hope of being crowned European champions.

Portugal can progress to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals with a draw or win in their final group match against the Netherlands on Sunday, but Mourinho remains sceptical about the team s chances.

I don t think Portugal are one of the two three best teams in the competition, Mourinho said on a visit to support the Singapore Olympic Foundation.

But this (is a) short competition with knockout, so Portugal if they reach the quarter-finals, anything can happen.

Mourinho backed reigning European and world champions Spain, who boast five Real Madrid players at the tournament, to reach the final.

Spain is the world champion and no doubt about it. They are one of the best teams in the Euros, Mourinho said.

If things go in the right direction, Spain has to qualify, Spain has to go through and Spain has to compete with Germany and a couple of other teams to be champions of Europe.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque drew criticism following his side s opening Euro 2012 match against Italy for fielding a side without a striker.

Mourinho, who guided Real Madrid to the La Liga title ahead of arch-rivals Barcelona last season, was clear about his philosophy as a manager.

Football is about goals. If I go to a football match and the result is 0-0 because I am a football fan I will be disappointed, because I am a football coach I can find in a 0-0 many good things, Mourinho said.

But if I look at the game as a fan, I want goals, and the most spectacular football is about goals.

You prefer a 5-5 than a 0-0.

If in the last season, a team beat all the records of goals and score 121 goals, I think that s the difference. I may be lucky, but I was the coach of that team, so you have my philosophy.
